Shortly after my daughter was born I spent long afternoons in shudders of sobs and laughter.
This was in the year 2000 before I could have entertained myself in front of this here screen for the better part of a day, so I parked my mushy butt in front of the great grandmother of all mommy blogs, the Neanderthal of reality TV, the ancient TLC. I would watch the hypnotic loop of The Baby Story followed by The Wedding Story followed by The Baby Story laughing and crying all the way.
I laughed at The Baby Story because most of these innocent, self-assured first-time mothers were about to give birth to an experience that was unlike anything they had ordered up, so contrary to their expectations, and so screamingly off-script. Then I bawled every time the baby was lifted up into their arms.
I cried at The Wedding Story because the goosepimply sense of romantic destiny, the adoration and most of all, friendship described by these couples was so unlike anything I experienced in my own marriage, either time. Neither time had I married what I would call "my best friend." My best friend was back in Texas and if I called her and said I had a flat tire in the pouring rain on the 405 Freeway, she would have climbed on a plane with two umbrellas and a jack. If I had reached either one of my h-u-s-b-a-n-d-s, they would have said, "Call Triple A." There are friends, and then there are advisors. My h-u-s-b-a-n-d Ned is not my most reliable friend, but he is my most consistent advisor.
By the time the happy couple on TV was drunk and dancing at the reception, by the time the wedding gown was stained and stepped on, the up-do coming undone, I would be laughing again.
We'd all better be laughing again, and soon.
Tears give way to laughter, laughter to tears. Marriage, motherhood, life, keeps handing us the opportunity to give ourselves away, and that's how we become our own best friend and advisor. We marry ourselves for life, and we join Triple A. Everyone else who comes into the picture is there for laughs. The laughs always begin amid the tears.

Thanks!
So, today at work I was in the room when three of my coworkers talked about the work/wife/parent challenge. Two of the women are not married. Not one of them has children. As they talked about the skills working/married/mothers must have, I simply could think of nothing to say. I just hung my head and laughed.
Count me in!
What a great giveaway.
I would love your book. Please enter me.
Hilarious (I guess tears will be coming). What is with the "domestic addresses only" policy? I am offended...
I love it. We should all be married to women.
Last night, I finished reading Momma Zen. I cried. I cried reading about your mother's voice, your face. I cried when you decided to ordain. I read passage after passage aloud to my h-u-s-b-a-n-d.
I come here, and I read "two umbrellas and a jack" and I laugh because it's so true.
So, yeah! I'll take another copy, or at least the chance at a free one with your autograph in it. I'm basically planning on giving a copy to every woman I know.
Thanks, Karen. For all of it.

I always thought my husband would be my best friend, so i slowly withdrew from the girl BFF.....And now, almost 10 years later i still cling to that notion....i think its time i buy triple A....
I would love a chance to read your book....I gave my mom a copy for Christmas, but so far she hasn't shared!
I'd love a chance to win! Thanks! Dawn :)

Loyal lurker coming out of hiding... I'd love to read your book. Your words are so inspiring.
me! i would love a copy of your book for my sister who was due yesterday!
I'd love to have a copy! Thanks for sharing!
Nothing gets to you more than a baby being placed in his/her mother's arms for the first time, heh? I have taken advantage of my local library both times I read your book. I'd love my own copy, not only to read again, but to share with other women.
Many Thanks.
what a great way to think about marriage...count me in, i'll give my other copy away if i win:-)
I think if I could tattoo the last paragraph of that post on the inside of my eyelids, it would help me, and my marriage, immensely.
And count me in too, please.
My husband is not my best friend. He is, without a doubt, my favorite person in this world, but my friends? They are women.
And myself.
This is what I had to laugh in recognition over as I read your words.
Marry yourself and you won't be lonely. And the rest? The laughing and tears? It is insanity and it is bliss.
Sounds like a fun book to read. Count me in!

Thanks for the giveaway :)
I'm so intrigued by your book. I'm definitely adding it to my reading list.
Karen-
I did that same loop with Max in my arms--the same tears and laughter. I love your description about how tears gives way to laughter to tears--it is life.
I have your book and am savoring it but know lots of people i want to share it with.
Meg

Wow. I was so drawn in by that post. You are a great writer.
I'd love to win!!
It would be nice if my husband were my best friend, sometimes I treat him like he is. But a best friend can listen to you whine and complain and know you just need to vent, hug, and things will be better. Husbands hear all those complaints and think there is a problem to be solved, work hard to help you fix it, get depressed when they can't. My husband suggested I solve the dilemma of balancing motherhood and household work with a daily to do list. It's helping a little. But more than a solution, I just needed a hug. He gives those, too, but doesn't always realize the hug, which seems easy and little, is just as helpful.
I'm in! Thanks!
I would love to read it. Please sign me up.
Thank you for this awesome giveaway, I'd love to be entered to win.
I would love to read your book. You seem to have such a way with words!
I have a 3 month old and I could really benefit from this book!
I always refer to my w-i-f-e as my beloved life partner in my blog. Once I called her the "other parent" (it was a story of my annoyance) and I had to change it back immediately.
I'd find a good person to give another copy of your book to. My neighborhood has been very fertile this winter.

Great contest! I want to win!!
My h-u-s-b-a-n-d is gone for the week on a business trip and my baby and I enjoyed an overnight visit with his boss's wife and 19-month old. She showed me your book. When the babes were asleep, I sat down in a sofa and enjoyed some recommended chapters. So much has helped me today because last night the fire had gone out and my baby was so cold and couldn't sleep without nursing constantly. I have learned not to inflate or downplay my fatigue. This has made me feel so unburdened. It means that I now see that complaining will not lift it away and denying it would never have given me that nap. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I look forward to reading the rest soon, as well as giving my friends the gift of your words.
awesome giveaway! please throw my name in the hat too! good luck everyone!

I'm in too!
One of the (many) problems with my marriage was that I tried to convince myself that we each other's best friends. The frustration at being unable to shoehorn myself into the role was at once heartbreaking and stifling.
would love to read your new book - congratulations! and thanks for sharing!

I'm behind on reading blogs! I loved it when you said, "We marry ourselves..." Oh how true. I would say my husband is my best friend because there is no one else I know that can take that title. My female friends are scattered. They don't live near me anymore. Yet, he does give me everything I need in a friend. I miss my girlfriends very much.
What a great title, very catchy. Would love to read it!
Please enter me.
This looks like a great read.

I'm a SAHM who home schools a 13-yr-old son and schleps a 15-yr-old daughter 40 mins round trip to school twice a day, and has a hubby who works at home...which essentially entails offering his unsolicited opinion about what son and I should be doing at every twist and bend. I asked him how he would feel if I marched into his office several times a day to offer my ideas on how he should be doing HIS job...utter silence. The badgering stops for a day or two before he amps it up again. It is very peaceful here when he's on the road!
Don't get me wrong--he's a great guy, and my #1 supporter, but damn! he's a buttinski!
I think I should be awarded the book because 1) I practice Zen Buddhism and 2) I'm turning 50 on Monday. My e-mail is glutenfreegirl@hotmail.com.
Warm regards, Dana
Would love to win. You didn't specify domestic address of which country??? My address is a domestic address to where I live.
