When we moved into this house, there was a bowl with 3 goldfish on our porch. We assumed it was some kind of house warming gift (later in turned out to be a wacky date request for the former owner's teenage son). We kept the fish, replacing them as often as they expired. At first, I was very diligent about the water and such. Eventually, I would just use water from the tap. The tap water fish's lives were just as long (which is to say, just as short). The cat kept drinking the from the fish bowl and the fish kept committing suicide. It upset the kids (more so, the fish, I'm sure). Now, we just have kitties.
That's my fish story.

Zippy already expired . . . which is why I turned this into a memorial post first thing this morning. I attribute it to the knowing violation of another of my fish tenets: no more than one tenant per bowl!

What a wacky ride this life can be!
Our house in Maryland is surrounded by a number of fish places of rest/return to trees, and two greatly mourned hamster graves. Alas, our intimacy with California has no bones in it.

As a child I held a funeral for one of my fish - complete with a casket and taps play on my trumpet. The grave was sprinkled with fish food. I think I must have been around eleven-years-old. I've become more practical with age. My children not so much. I foresee additional fishy funerals in my future.

AFTER I bought goldfish (and killed a few), I was told that they are not easy fish to keep, and that beginners should begin with different fish. (Beginners mind does not begin with goldfish?) That said, I now have the hardiest pair of goldfish ever -- they made the move from Albuquerque to Spokane and lived to tell the tail/tale. They really do need a full tank set-up, with heater, air bubbler, gravel, filter, etc. (Maybe Ms. G want to learn the art of fish keeping?)
